... is an architecture to attach remote computer storage devices (such as disk arrays, tape libraries) to servers in such a way that the devices appear as locally attached to the operating system. As opposed to a NAS, which provides both storage and filesystems, a SAN provides only block-based storage and leaves filesystem concerns on the "client" side.
